How Long Does Sciatica Last?
Sciatica pain results from sciatic nerve irritation. Pain typically spreads from the lower back to below the
knee. The largest nerve cluster, the sciatic nerve begins from the roots in the lumbar section of the spine and
extends through the hips, buttock, and down the lower limbs. Irritation of the sciatica can be mild to crippling.
The range of pain and the potential of it worsening leave those that suffer from it wondering how long it will
last.
What Causes Sciatica Pain?
There are numerous causes of sciatica pain. Some causes are far more serious than
others. The cause of the sciatica may determine how long the pain will last. One of the most common cause is
because of a herniated disc that presses directly against the nerve. Also, in many cases an over tightened muslce
may be causing your sciatica. Symptoms of sciatica can be produced by any
irritation or inflammation of the nerve. Some of these causes may include irritation of the nerve from tumors,
inflamed muscle, infections, injury, adjacent bone or even internal bleeding. With the wide range of causes, it is
easy to see that treatment can vary, as will the length of time the sciatica will last.

Will my Sciatica Last Forever?
To be honest, everyone is different. In most non-radiculopathic sciatica, complete recovery can take 2 weeks
to 10 weeks and up to 6 months in more extreme cases. Although many people that find the right particluar
sciatica stretches and exercises can get some relief right
away. This would depend on the cause. Infections, inflamed muscles, and herniated discs would have to be treated prior to treating the back pain. In the
lightest of cases, stretching exercises will strengthen the back enough to push the lumbar spine back into place
and remove pressure from the nerve. Medication may be used to help speed up recovery from infections, but
strengthening and stretching is essential. More professionals are recommending Pilates and yoga for helping recover
from the symptoms of sciatica.
Do I need to see a Doctor?
The length of time someone will suffer from sciatica can be drastically reduced by consulting with your doctor.
They can help to determine the seriousness of the cause and set treatments accordingly. In some extreme cases,
surgery is needed. The longer sciatica goes untreated, the more likely it is to cause damage that can only be
remedied with surgery. If the pain is being caused by radibulopathic sciatica, then the patient will need to have a
physician’s assistance in trying to recover.
Sciatica can be more than just a minor irritation. It can become a chronic, life-long, battle with pain. Consult
with your doctor for the best way to treat your cause of sciatica, not just the symptoms.
