Ignoring Sciatica Pain
The age-old expression “Ignoring the problem will not make it go away,”
still holds true. How many go to bed, or wake in the morning, with nagging lower back pains that seem to get worse
and worse with passing time. Sciatica pain is something that should never be ignored. Unfortunately, many people
convince themselves that it is their mattress, a strain, or just old age. Ignoring sciatica pain will not make it
go away; it can make it far worse.

What Causes Sciatica
Sciatica can cause pain, weakness, even numbness along the sciatic nerve’s pathway. It is accompanied by low back
pain and afflicts nearly every adult at some time and to some degree. This baffling condition causes lower back pain that can arise without warning and can last for a long time.
When people ignore sciatica pain, they are ignoring a problem that can
become a life-long battle. While the causes for sciatica pain are numerous, it should not be assumed that it is
simply an inflamed muscle. Infections, ruptured discs, internal bleeding, and causes that are more serious are not
uncommon. Suffering through the pain will not make it go away.
Can I Treat it on My Own?
Some people take matters into their own hands. They use a holistic approach to treating their back pain. Popular
stretching exercises, such as Pilates or yoga, may help ease the pain if strained muscles cause it. Pain
medications may bring some comfort, but can have a counter effect. By just treating the pain, people may continue

What About Bed Rest?
While this can help for strained muscle, it is not recommended to stay inactive for too long. When people do not do
some exercise, the muscles that support their back weaken. This weakening can cause more problems because the
muscles are no longer strong enough to hold the spine in place. This can aggravate the condition even more. Bed
rest is recommended for brief periods, but prolonged bed rest is just like ignoring the sciatica pain.
What Should be Done?
A doctor should be consulted for pains that do not get better with brief bed-rest, anti-inflammatory medicine, or stretching/ exercising. There are serious causes
for sciatica pain that may require physical therapy or even surgery. In the extreme cases of surgery, the longer
that the sciatica pain is ignored the less likely that even surgery will allow a full recovery. Keep in mind that
some doctors are not likely to suggest natural treatment, and typically people would rather try safe, natural
treatments before resorting to drugs and or surgery.
